The Owner of the House

John D. McDonald was a Canadian-born railroad contractor who founded the Fremont Manufacturing Company and served on the board of directors of the Fremont National Bank.

He hired M.A. Ecker to design this house in the Queen Anne and Romanesque Revival architectural styles.

McDonald was a prominent figure in the community, and his home reflects his success and status in the community during that period.

The McDonald family lived in the house until 1898.

In 1905, it became the first hospital in Fremont under the name Kirby Hospital.
