Cheeseburger Pie

Craving some serious comfort food? Well, get ready for Cheeseburger Pie—it’s about to become your new obsession.

Hearty ground beef sizzling away until it’s perfectly browned and crumbly, mingling with sweet yellow onions and a dash of Worcestershire sauce for that extra savory punch. And let’s not forget the cheese—lots of it! Sprinkle it on top and watch it get all melty and irresistible. Finish it off with your favorite burger toppings—pickles, ketchup, or hey, why not try some burger sauce for a twist?

Now, let’s clear something up—cheeseburger pie isn’t your typical pie. It’s not quite a quiche either. Think of it more like a mouthwatering breakfast casserole that’s hearty enough to satisfy any craving. And fun fact: while variations of this recipe have been around for ages, it really took off when it appeared on the back of Bisquick boxes. So, grab your pie dish, and let’s dive into this cheesy, beefy goodness!

Ingredients

1 tbsp. olive oil
1 lb. lean ground beef
1/2 c. chopped yellow onion
1/2 tsp. kosher salt
1 tbsp. Worcestershire sauce
Nonstick cooking spray
2 large eggs
1 c. whole buttermilk, room temperature
1 tbsp. salted butter, melted
1/2 c. all-purpose flour
1 tsp. baking powder
1 c. shredded cheddar cheese
Pickle slices, for serving
Ketchup, for serving
Burger sauce, for serving

Directions

Step 1: Preheat the oven to 400°.

Step 2: Heat a large skillet over medium heat. Add olive oil, ground beef, onion, and salt. Cook, stirring occasionally, until meat is browned and crumbly and onions are softened, 8 to 10 minutes. Drain any excess fat from the pan, if you like. Add the Worcestershire sauce and cook until absorbed, about 2 minutes more.

Step 3: Spray a 9-inch pie plate with nonstick cooking spray. Transfer the meat mixture to the pie plate.

Step 4: Whisk together the eggs, buttermilk, and melted butter in a medium bowl until smooth. Add flour and baking powder; whisk until smooth. Pour over the hamburger mixture in the pie plate.

Step 5: Sprinkle all over with cheese. Bake until top is browned and center is set, about 25 minutes.

Step 6: Serve the pie in slices with pickles, ketchup and/or burger sauce alongside.

Tips

Lean Ground Beef: Opt for lean ground beef to reduce the overall fat content of the dish.

Buttermilk Substitute: If you don’t have whole buttermilk, you can make a substitute by adding 1 tablespoon of lemon juice or vinegar to 1 cup of whole milk. Let it sit for 5 minutes before using.

Customize Toppings: Feel free to customize the toppings to suit your taste preferences. Add crispy bacon, sliced tomatoes, or your favorite cheese for extra flavor.

Make it Ahead: Prepare the meat mixture and batter ahead of time and assemble the pie just before baking for a quick and easy meal option.
