‘ AITAH for not allowing my wife to go through my sister’s personal diary?’

A couple years ago, my sister started writing her thoughts and feelings on a personal diary after her therapist recommended it. Last week, my sister gave me this diary, and said she wanted me to read it, but it was only meant for me.

I was surprised and asked her why and she said she wanted someone else in the world to know her true thoughts and feelings and that person was me.

I have started reading it in my free time, and it definitely is very personal and I kind of need to take a breather occasionally and drink water. My wife however is very curious about it and wants to read it too, but I have given my wife a hard no, and told her that’s a massive i**asion of privacy.

My wife was very surprised and we’ve had a lot of discussions on it, but I have a very hard stance on it and there is just no way I’ll allow her to read the diary.. AITAH?

Here’s what Redditors had to say:

thegodcomplex17 −  NTA. Your sister gave it to you and only you to read. It’s hugely disrespectful of your wife to even consider reading it, I’d make sure you’re hiding it away where she can’t find it.

DogTheBotHunter −  Obviously NTA. Does your sister’s therapist know that she’s asked you to read her diary?. That seems like a really bad idea

Square-Minimum-6042 −  Secure that diary. If your wife does not get what a terrible thing it is to read it that diary will not be safe in your house.

JDKoRnSlut −  NTA. Your sister trusts you, you can’t nuke that.

BlueGreen_1956 −  NTA. Yikes! Absolutely not. Don’t even think for a minute that if your wife read it, she wouldn’t use what she read the first time she had the slightest disagreement with your sister. You probably should keep it under lock and key.

Intrepid_Ad6823 −  Lock that diary down I do not trust the wife not to read it

dashittyguy −  NTA. It’s your sister’s diary, so why should ur wife read it? Aint diary a personal thing

Hannah-King −  Nah, you’re not the a**hole. Your sister trusted you with something personal, and you’re just respecting her boundaries.

NoirLyvryn −  NTA. Your sister’s trust is important, and you’re right to protect her privacy.

contemporary_romance −  Nope, you tell that prying b**ch of a wife of yours that if she wants access to the diary, she needs to ask your sister personally. Edit : Also sorry I genuinely didn’t mean to offend your wife i just thought it was the funniest way to express my opinion.

Was the Redditor right to prioritize his sister’s privacy, or should he have considered his wife’s feelings and allowed her to read the diary? How would you handle balancing trust with your spouse against a sibling’s deeply personal request? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
