A flute’s trill capturing global headlines is a rarity, yet that’s exactly what happened in a story that blended music with politics. Coverage varied, with some conservative voices in the U.S. expressing strong opinions.

Andrew McCarthy, a Republican, notably stated that everyone involved “should be deported,” highlighting the controversy’s intensity.

On an unforgettable evening of September 27, 2022, Lizzo’s concert took a historic turn. Carol Lynn Ward-Bamford, the curator of the Library of Congress’s flute collection, presented Lizzo with a crystal flute that is over two centuries old.

Lizzo’s excitement was palpable as she introduced the legendary James Madison’s flute to the audience.

James Madison’s flute, crafted by Claude Laurent in Paris in 1813, is a piece of history that had rarely been played. Madison himself never publicly acknowledged receiving the flute.

Laurent had reached out to Madison, hoping to hear that his crystal flute, a token of his craftsmanship, had been well received.

This flute is believed to be one of only two items saved by Dolley Madison during the British invasion of Washington in 1812, the other being a portrait of George Washington.

The Library of Congress, housing the world’s most extensive flute collection with over 18,000 pieces, aimed to connect this historical collection with the younger generation.

Carla Hayden, the Librarian of Congress, saw an opportunity in Lizzo, not just for her fame as a rapper, but also for her background as a classically trained flutist.

Lizzo’s request to play James Madison’s flute at her Washington concert was met with enthusiasm by the instrument’s caretakers. With stringent security measures in place, she was given the green light to play the historic flute for just a few moments.

Those brief seconds of her performance became a global talking point, not just because of the instrument’s antiquity and worth, but for reasons that touched on deeper societal themes.

As a champion of body positivity and an African American woman, Lizzo is celebrated for her performances in bold, dancer’s leotard attire. She views her actions as a statement of political and feminist empowerment, embracing her figure and showcasing her strength, stamina, and agility.

Lizzo’s September 2021 TED Talk further explored the cultural significance of twerking, tracing its roots back to African and African American traditions. This context gains additional layers, considering President Madison’s history as a slave owner.

The event of Lizzo playing the flute of a historical figure known for owning slaves sparked widespread interest and debate, provoking strong reactions from various quarters. For some, it was a moment of intrigue and joy; for others, particularly the conservative circles, it was a triggering moment.

Regardless of the perspective, Lizzo’s iconic moment with the flute significantly heightened awareness and appreciation for the Library of Congress’s extensive flute collection.
