‘ UPDATE:AITA for saying that my daughter’s best friend has to go to a doctor’
First, I want to thank everyone who gave me advice on my original post. I’m sorry I couldn’t respond or post an update sooner, but here’s where things stand now.
After much thought and concern, we went to the doctor, and he was diagnosed with an eating disorder. I won’t go into too much detail, but it’s been a difficult journey for everyone involved. The good news is that he’s now receiving the help he needs. He’s attending both physical and mental therapy, and while it’s a slow process, he’s making progress and improving day by day.
I’m covering all the costs for his treatment, and fortunately, money isn’t an issue. He’s still staying with me, and I regularly communicate with his parents, who fully approve of everything. They’re incredibly grateful for the support he’s receiving.
Even my daughter has come around—she apologized for initially thinking I was in the wrong for stepping in and getting him help. Now, she understands why it was necessary, and we’re all working together to support him through his recovery.
He knows he’s not alone, and I have every hope that he’ll make a full recovery in time. Thank you again for your kind words, thoughtful judgment, and well wishes. They meant more than you could know.
Here’s how people reacted to the post:
noicebutnotsmort − Glad that the kid is getting the help he needs. Good job OP
the_last_basselope − It’s awful he has an eating disorder, but I am so, so, so glad that it turned out to not be cancer which was the concern of many in the first post. Kudos for getting him help and sticking with him – you are an awesome person and amazing parent, even to “extra” kids.
Cucoloris − Caring for another human being is the opposite of being an a**hole. I hope he recovers soon. Good on you, and thanks for the update.
_Grim_Reaper_1 − I’m glad he is getting help I thought he was doing drugs or had leukaemia but I didnt think of an eating disorder.
[Reddit User] − You are a good egg. Thanks for taking initiative on this, and taking care of him.
Serelia − Thank you for stepping in. I wish them a quick recovery!
sycarte − Eating disorders in teenage boys and men are often overlooked as it’s seen as a teen girl disorder. Wishing him inner peace, thank you for showing the concern he needed, OP.
SNORALAXX − Thank you so much for the update. I really thought the poor kid had cancer! But of course, EDs can be fatal too so, OP, you have saved that boy’s life. I needed some good news to restore my faith in humanity today. Keep being amazing.
heartshapedtattoo − I’m glad to hear he’s alright. It’ll be a long road of recovery since eating disorder is a tricky thing. I do hope he will recover and lead a good life. You’re a good person for trying to help him.
CaitKit − I’m glad he’s getting help, EDs have the highest fatality rate of any mental illness and if you hadn’t stepped in he very well could’ve suffered.
