UPDATE: AITA for changing the package pickup each time someone uses my email for orders?
A Redditor shares an update on a situation involving repeated mistakes with email addresses. In their previous post, they mentioned how someone kept mistakenly using their email for package orders, leading to confusion and frustration.
The Redditor couldn’t cancel the orders, but they managed to change the package pickup location each time, even sending them 20 miles away to get the message across. The person who was misusing the email continued to complain, but after a firm response and an analogy about how easy it was to correct the email, they apologized and promised it wouldn’t happen again. Read the original story below for more details on the resolution.
‘ UPDATE: AITA for changing the package pickup each time someone uses my email for orders?’
First of all, there was a lot of questions on the last post. Sorry for not answering any of them, the post got big really quick and I guess I got o**rwhelmed. So to answer a few questions, why didn’t I cancel his orders?
I would get emails from ups and from there, I can only change the location of the package. I believe if I wanted to cancel it, it would have to be from the company itself. I tried emailing them but they said that it was an honest mistake from the other guy so there was no need to cancel (it wasn’t an honest mistake, it was like the 10th time it happened) Another question was, why 20 miles away?
That’s the furthest location it was able to give me for some reason so I figured I’d stick with it.. Ok so now for the update. He ended up messaging me again and called me out once again saying I’m an a**hole and I ruined his day by making him drive 20 miles both ways.
I just said that it’s exhausting getting emails that should be for him and that as long as he keeps using mine, I’ll be putting his packages further and further away (I can’t actually do more miles, it was just to scare him)
I also used the analogy many of you wrote in the comments. “It takes less time to correct the email then to drive 20 miles” I think this really opened up his eyes because on the next message he sent me, he apologized and said that I was right, it shouldn’t happen again. All in all, I think things went relatively smooth. I’m hoping that it doesn’t happen again or else I’ll just change the location once again haha
TL;DR: He apologized for using my email, says it won’t happen again
Here’s what the community had to contribute:
circe_elena − This is awesome, excellent update! So glad the guy apologised and seems to realise he was being a twit.. Bravo. NTA. Whatever you need.
sarahlizzy − Someone kept using mine a while back. They stopped when I cancelled their Apple Music subscription.
NaviMinx − What was the reason for using your email exactly?
fantsukissa − It’s annoying when people typo their own email. My gmail adress is very short and simple. I got it when gmail was still invite only, so I’ve had it for a long time. Many people around the world apparently have same but longer email or otherwise similar. So I get put on so many random mailing lists, register to sites etc.
Few people bought plane tickets with my email (they had full name, date of birth etc so I found them on facebook and got their real emails and forwarded the tickets, so all was good). One person keeps making new gmail accounts with my email as linked recovery address. It sucks, but I don’t want to give up my email.
Sorcatarius − So someone once got into my domino’s account and used by free points for pizzas. Different province, so no issues proving it, getting them canceled and getting my point back, but I wanted to get them back for it, so I signed them up for a years subscription to the Jehovas Witness newsletter, and a free visit from a pair of Mormons to drop off a Bible and a message from God.
[Reddit User] − Holy cow! You got an AH to see that he was wrong and even apologize! Well done!
Assliam- − I remember reading the last post you had and laughing at the pettiness, this is something I would do. It’s good he finally realized he was in the wrong and apologized. He should have done so much sooner but at least he got to it eventually.
MonkeyPolice − NTA. You won!
Lizziam − I’m jealous. I’ve cancelled so many site memberships for the i**ot that keeps using my email address and she’s still at it after several years. I thought I had triumphed when she created an Instagram account and I was able to message her but she just replied with a stupid emoticon and kept doing it.
disowningdad − I’m hoping that it doesn’t happen again or else I’ll just change the location once again haha. He apologised, and seems intent on correcting the error. So if it happens once or twice from now on, just give him the benefit of the doubt that he just forgot he hadn’t updated that account yet. If nothing improves, yeah go for it!
Do you think the Redditor handled the situation in the best way by making the other person drive far, or should they have taken a different approach? How would you deal with someone repeatedly using your email address for their orders? Share your thoughts below!
