Sadly, just a week after his tour ended, Petty passed away on October 2, 2017, from an accidental overdose of opioids and sedatives. His wife and daughter shared that Petty had been taking medication for a fractured hip, which worsened his pain and caused the overdose.
Despite his declining health, Petty was determined to fulfill his commitments to his crew and fans. He chose not to have hip replacement surgery and went ahead with the tour because of his passion for performing and his dedication to his craft.
