Theodore Carpenter House – A Filming Location For The Movie “Ragtime,” Based On E.L. Doctorow’s Novel

The Theodore Carpenter House is located in Mount Kisco, Westchester County, New York.

It is a stunning example of Second Empire Victorian architecture.

The house was built in 1877 for Theodore Carpenter, a prominent local merchant and official.

Architecture

The house features classic Victorian elements such as mansard roofs, a tower, bay windows, a heavy bracketed cornice, and intricate iron cresting along the roofline.

The interior is equally impressive, with 11-foot ceilings adorned with ornate crowns and plaster moldings.

Large windows flood the parlour, living room, and dining room with natural light, highlighting the beautiful period details.

Bedrooms and Bathrooms

The home boasts four generously sized bedrooms, including a master suite with a private bath, office, and walk-in closet.

The 3.5 bathrooms feature thoughtful upgrades, such as wainscoting and period-inspired sinks, adding to the house’s timeless appeal.

The house gained fame in 1980 as a principal filming location for the movie “Ragtime,” based on E.L. Doctorow’s novel.

The film crew spent nearly a month at the property, transforming it to fit the early 20th-century setting of the story.

Moreover, the Theodore Carpenter House served as the inspiration for the home of Samantha Parkington, one of the original American Girl dolls.

Author Valerie Tripp, who grew up in Mount Kisco, used the house as a model for Samantha’s grandmother’s residence in the beloved book series.
