Robert Downey Jr. Blew Everyone Away By Singing “Driven To Tears” At Sting’s 60th Birthday
Robert Downey Jr. is renowned for his acting, but his talents extend beyond the silver screen; he possesses a voice that could rival even the best singers.
In October 2011, the 48-year-old Avengers actor appeared alongside the singer during Sting’s 60th birthday celebration at the Beacon Theatre in NYC.
“When I was in my mid-20s I decided I was one of the great songwriters of all-time, and I had this trippy little cassette tape of all my demos that were just not good,” Downey shared.
One memorable incident involved him trying to pass a demo tape to Sting after one of his concerts, catching Sting off guard.
Trudy Styler, Sting’s wife, recognized Robert Downey Jr. from his role in “Less Than Zero.” “How nice of you to have come,” she greeted the young actor warmly.
For 25 years, Sting and Trudy kept a tape without mentioning it, until they rediscovered it and offered it back to Downey. His response was deadpan: if they listened to it, they should rewind the cassette and tape the case closed again.
Then Sting invited Downey to perform “Driven To Tears” at his birthday celebration. Many viewers were pleasantly surprised by Robert’s vocal prowess, matching Sting note for note in a memorable duet of “Driven To Tears.”
Prepare to be impressed by the amazing collaboration below:
On stage, Downey Jr. perfectly belted out Police’s 1980 hit “Driven to Tears” while Sting provided backup vocals and guitar.
Many were struck by Downey’s vocal performance, which brought to mind Nils Lofgren, the longtime E-Street Band guitarist and renowned solo artist known for his unique voice in rock music.
Their performance was then shared on YouTube and received an abundance of compliments.
One person wrote, “I was blown away when I found this! Had no idea Robert Downy Jr could sing like this! Man this is amazing.”
Another added, “Great Duo with Robert and Sting. Love the music and how hard the entire band, back up and main characters work on producing an outstanding performance.”
