Monks’ “The Sound Of Silence” Rendition Wins Hearts Worldwide
A group of singers dressed as monks put a unique twist on “The Sound Of Silence,” making it one of the most popular versions of the timeless song. Their performance seamlessly combines elements of pop and choral music, with a hint of new-age mysticism, resulting in a captivating rendition that caught the attention of audiences on social media.
Despite their monk-like appearance, Gregorian is actually a concept band from Germany and not actual monks. While they draw inspiration from Gregorian Chant, they incorporate instrumental accompaniment and sing contemporary pop songs, infusing their performances with a flamboyant style.
Their debut album, Sadisfaction, released in 1991, featured two female lead vocalists, but subsequent releases follow the Gregorian tradition of male choirs. During their concerts, the choir dons monk-like robes, but their presentation leans more towards a pop concert atmosphere rather than a traditional church setting.
One of Gregorian’s most popular tracks is “The Sound of Silence,” which gained viral popularity on social media for quite some time. It’s not hard to understand why the video resonated with so many people. “The Sound of Silence” is a modern classic that perfectly aligns with Gregorian-founder Frank Peterson’s vision of blending pop and choral music, with a sprinkle of new-age mysticism.
After the unique performance was uploaded on YouTube, it got much attention. Many applauded their voice as one wrote, “I love this version of this song so much that it made me cry truly beautifully.”
One added, “I love their voices. For me, who grew up Roman Catholic, and exposed to a lot of Gregorian chants, I’d love to hear these acapella.”
