Judge Luke Bryan And An “American Idol” Contestant Deliver The Best Unrehearsed Duet Ever

It’s incredible to perform with your idols; for some, this dream becomes a reality. Ethan Payne, a 15-year-old American Idol contestant, earned a ticket to Hollywood and had the chance to perform with Luke Bryan—not just once, but twice.

What started as a special meet-and-greet became a dream come true when Luke invited Ethan to sing at one of his shows in Dallas, with an audience of 50,000. Luke even gifted the then-13-year-old with one of his guitars, making the moment even more unforgettable.

Luke recognized his former concert buddy on the American Idol stage two years later. “I know this feller,” he said when Ethan appeared. What touched our hearts was that the young singer came armed with the guitar Luke had given him.

But the excitement didn’t end there. Ethan surprised everyone by inviting the popular country artist to join him as he began playing the chords to Luke’s “Do I.” Luke agreed with a smile, saying, “He came to Texas to show me up, now he done come to American Idol to show me up.”

Ethan, just 15 years old, started the song while both performers played their guitars in perfect harmony. Soon after, Luke’s voice joined in, creating one of the best impromptu duets ever.

Ethan’s bright smile, relaxed demeanor, and mature voice impressed the judges. He received applause and a standing ovation from Katy Perry and Lionel Richie. All three judges enthusiastically voted to advance Payne to the Hollywood round of American Idol.

After his audition, Payne said of the moment, “Absolutely, 100 percent, the best day of my life.”
