From A Homeless Janitor, Jim Carrey Is Now A Millionaire Wholesome Grandpa

Jim Carrey, despite his celebrated status, faced considerable adversity during his youth, grappling with financial difficulties and sacrificing much for his family’s well-being. On the cusp of stardom, he purchased his first home, a space he personalized and cherished for three decades, particularly for the companionship of his pets. In 2010, the actor embraced the role of a grandfather, cherishing moments with his grandson who bears a striking resemblance to him.

Jim Carrey is such a household name in Hollywood, renowned for his comedic genius and magnetic presence. He is best known for his roles in “The Mask” and “Ace Ventura: Pet Detective,” yet his repertoire extends far beyond these classics.

His filmography also boasts critical and commercial hits like “The Truman Show,” “Liar Liar,” “Dark Crimes,” “I Love You Phillip Morris,” “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind,” “Kick-Ass 2” and “Dumb and Dumber Two”. showcasing his versatility across a range of genres. His career has also been marked by associations with some of the most recognized women in Hollywood.

Jim Carrey has been linked romantically to several celebrities, including Renée Zellweger, Jenny McCarthy, January Jones, and Linda Ronstadt, among others. Despite these high-profile relationships, he has walked down the aisle only twice. Melissa Womer was his first wife, followed by Lauren Holly.

During his marriage to Womer, they welcomed their daughter, Jane, who would go on to compete in “American Idol” in 2012. More recently, Carrey was in a relationship with Ginger Gonzaga, with the duo making their partnership public in 2019. Unfortunately, they parted ways in October 2022. As of now, Carrey appears to be single.

Carrey’s Tough Childhood and His First Home

Jim Carrey’s remarkable journey to stardom and widespread acclaim masks the difficulties of his early life. It’s a testament to how individuals shaped by adversity often strive to bring joy to others.

Few are aware that there was a time Carrey and his family experienced homelessness, finding shelter in their vehicle. Today, with a fortune exceeding $150 million, Carrey’s humble beginnings and his path to success seem almost unimaginable.

The story of this beloved figure from Canada mirrors a harsh reality for too many across North America — living without a home. Yet, Carrey’s rise from such dire circumstances to global fame is an inspiring narrative of resilience and triumph.

Life took a different turn for Carrey and his family when his father, Percy, an accountant, lost his job, plunging them from a modest “lower middle class” existence into financial hardship. At just 15, Carrey, alongside his brother, took on janitorial work to contribute to the family’s income.

Their situation worsened to the point where the family’s home was a Volkswagen van, moving between trailer parks and campgrounds for shelter. At times, they were even reduced to setting up a tent in the yard of a relative.

In addition to their cleaning roles, Carrey and his brother took on security work at a tire factory, where their father eventually secured employment. Despite their efforts, the family’s earnings were insufficient to escape their predicament.

Before adversity hit, Jim was an exemplary student, but the demanding work hours took a toll on his academic performance and self-confidence. Despite this, he was already recognized for his vibrant character and fearlessness. Unfortunately, at the age of 16, he had to leave high school behind to continue working.

At the same time, his mother struggled with addiction issues, leaving her unable to provide much support for her family. Carrey reflected on this, noting, “And that’s not intentional abandonment — she was always there for me, she was always there in the house — but if you’re high on painkillers, that’s abandonment.”

He further elaborated that it’s common to feel neglected by others at various points in life. Yet, this sense of abandonment often leads to self-reliance, which isn’t inherently negative. Carrey also shared that the whole ordeal fueled his anger.

Fortunately, his innate sense of humor played a crucial role in his coping mechanism.

Following his exhaustive workdays, Jim Carrey lit up the nightlife, gracing stages across Ontario with his stand-up routines. His comedic talent didn’t go unnoticed, paving the way for him to warm up crowds for legends like Rodney Dangerfield and Buddy Hackett.

Reflecting on those times, Carrey credits his sense of humor as the lifeline that pulled him through adversity. The journey was far from smooth, especially with his daytime role as a janitor being compounded by cruel pranks from factory workers, intended to belittle him.

With each passing day, Jim Carrey’s frustration with the world grew stronger, fueled largely by witnessing his father’s suffering. Despite this, he clung to hope, diligently writing stand-up material and clinging to his dreams. Looking back, Carrey acknowledges the invaluable lessons learned during these trying times.

He credits his parents with imparting wisdom about the essence of life. Yet, the harsh realities forced him to forgo the innocence of his youth, leading to a teenage experience vastly different from his peers.

Turning the lens of humor on his tumultuous life story endowed him with a genuineness that resonated deeply with audiences, enhancing his appeal. Even so, challenges persisted, notably when he landed his breakthrough role in “Ace Ventura.”

Many critics hated the movie and gave him negative reviews, but the box office doesn’t lie, as it was an evident success. Therefore, Carrey had the power to negotiate his future contracts by the time he was offered the leading role in “The Mask.”His success in “Ace Ventura” changed another significant part of Carrey’s life. He bought his first home in Los Angeles in 1994, right before the film’s release. Back then, it was estimated at $3.8 million.

No one loved that home more than Carrey, calling it “a place of enchantment and inspiration” to him over “30 very creative and prosperous years.” He added:

“Every night, the owls sang me lullabies, and every morning, I sipped my cup of joe with the hawks and hummingbirds under a giant grandfather pine.”

Despite the less-than-favorable reviews from critics, the successful commercial triumph of “Ace Ventura” spoke volumes. This success granted Carrey leverage in negotiating future roles, notably his lead in “The Mask.” The film’s success marked a pivotal moment for the actor, enabling him to purchase his inaugural Los Angeles home in 1994, valued at $3.8 million at the time.

Carrey cherished this new home more than any other, describing it as a “haven of enchantment and inspiration” that sustained him through “30 years of creativity and prosperity.” “Every night, the owls sang me lullabies, and every morning, I sipped my cup of joe with the hawks and hummingbirds under a giant grandfather pine,” he jubilantly recalled.

He sold his beloved home

Jim Carrey recently made headlines as he decided to sell his first home after 30 years, with the property now on the market for $28.9 million. Upon announcing the sale, Carrey shared:

“For three decades it’s been a sanctuary for me but I don’t spend a lot of time there now and I want someone else to enjoy it like I have.”

This exquisite ranch-style estate spans 12,700 square feet, boasting five bedrooms and nine bathrooms within the main residence. It features towering, beamed ceilings and multiple fireplaces that add warmth to the living and dining spaces. The home is equipped with a fully professional kitchen, complete with bar seating and an adjacent breakfast nook.

The property is adorned with pear trees and includes a balcony off the master bedroom, offering unparalleled views. The 2-acre estate includes a gym, tennis court, an area dedicated to outdoor yoga, a swimming pool, a spa-equipped pool house, and much more, creating quite a luxurious living experience.

The estate also boasts a bespoke home theater, showcasing memorabilia from Carrey’s illustrious career, including the distinctive overalls from “The Cable Guy,” the memorable Santa suit from “The Grinch,” the iconic Riddler costume from “Batman Forever,” and various awards. Online photos of the property also highlight some of Carrey’s personal artwork.

Known for his vibrant and expressive paintings, Carrey’s artistic flair is evident throughout his home. Among his creations is a sculpture named “Ayla,” which graces the property’s lawn. However, these personal treasures and artworks will not be included in the sale, with Sotheby’s International Realty handling the transaction.

Carrey’s passion for art was vividly captured in the 2017 short documentary “I Needed Color,” where he delves into his artistic journey and methodology.

“When I really started painting a lot, I had become so obsessed that there was nowhere to move in my home. Paintings were everywhere. They were becoming part of the furniture; I was eating on them. […] You can tell my inner life by the darkness in some of them. You can tell what I want from the brightness in some of them,” the actor shared.

Jim Carrey is also a dedicated grandfather

In 2010, at 47 years old, “The Mask” star embraced the role of a grandfather. His daughter, Jane, at 22, and her husband, Alex Santana, welcomed their son, Jackson Riley Santana, into the world, weighing in at 7 pounds, 11 ounces. Carrey joyfully shared the news of Jackson’s arrival on his since-deleted Twitter account, exclaiming:

“Jackson Riley Santana, My Grandson, Born today! This is what 7lbs.11oz. of California dynamite looks like!”

During this time, Carrey was in a relationship with Jenny McCarthy, who also affectionately referred to herself as a grandmother. She expressed her gratitude towards the pediatrician and celebrated Jackson as a “beautiful, healthy baby boy” on Twitter. McCarthy’s current involvement with Jackson remains uncertain.

At the time, Carrey’s daughter, Jane Carrey was particularly thrilled to have a son, citing her ease in male company due to a lack of female friendships growing up. She feared a daughter might not take to her well.

Interestingly, Jane has pursued a career as a singer and songwriter, while Alex Santana is the frontman for the band Blood Money. Jane voiced their commitment to juggling their music careers with their new parenting responsibilities, calling it their dreams coming true.

During various interviews at that time, the actor shared his elation at becoming a grandfather. He expressed surprise at embracing this new role at his age, highlighting that life’s milestones often arrive unexpectedly. Carrey remarked:

“I just get a lot of joy, a lot of joy from that little boy… he’s just magical. It’s the greatest feeling in the world, and as you get older…your connection to these things gets so intense…you just go, ‘Without this, I die.’”

Later, while in the UK promoting “Sonic the Hedgehog,” Carrey appeared on the “Lorraine” show, and openly discussed his bond with Jackson. The host, Lorraine Kelly, playfully commented on his youthful appearance, hardly fitting the grandfather stereotype.

Carrey humorously responded to being a doting grandfather, albeit slightly self-conscious about being addressed as “Grandpa” publicly. He described his grandson not just as a kin but also as a companion, even jokingly suggesting Jackson could as well be his personal bodyguard. This playful dynamic is precisely what one might anticipate from Carrey’s interactions with a child.

Jim Carrey shared that video gaming is a favorite pastime between him and Jackson, with the latter significantly outperforming him. The actor even has instituted a swear jar to raise the stake, humorously noting he’s now in debt to his grandson by “about $500.” Their gaming sessions are filled with lighthearted banter, fostering a special connection. Carrey humorously recounted:

“I’ll say something like, ‘I am gonna practice this, and I’m gonna kick your butt,’ and then he says, ‘Sure if you go back and get born again and start learning at the age of two.’ It’s unbelievable. He’s like a jet pilot already.”

As for Jackson’s future in Hollywood, it remains to be seen whether he will follow in his grandfather’s footsteps. Yet, there’s speculation that he could shine, especially in a potential “Ace Ventura” prequel, given his inherited charisma.
