I bought my sister’s wedding dress
A devoted sister shares a touching story about secretly buying her sibling’s wedding dress to preserve its sentimental value. Four years after her sister’s wedding, financial struggles led her to sell the gown, even though it held immense emotional significance.
Moved by her sister’s reluctance and tears, she used a work bonus to buy the dress anonymously through the second-hand website. Her plan? To surprise her sister on her anniversary with the altered version she had dreamed of wearing again. read the original story below…
‘ I bought my sister’s wedding dress ‘
My sister got married 4 years ago. She had her beautiful wedding dress made by a tailor she loved. Some months ago, she told us she’d put it on a second-hand website to sell it because she and her husband could use the money. I knew it obviously had a huge sentimental value.
She was even planning on having it shortened so that she could wear it again for their anniversary. She was selling it reluctantly— I could see tears in her eyes when she told us. What she doesn’t know is I created an account on the website and bought it anonymously.
I had a bonus last month and I couldn’t see a better way to spend my money. I plan on taking it to the tailor who made the dress, order the changes she wanted (thankfully we’re the same size !) and I want to gift it back to her for their anniversary in a few months. I love my sister. I hope it makes her happy.
Edit to add: some people are suggesting I don’t make any changes to the dress. Thank you for your concern! However, my sister was in the process of having it shortened with her tailor anyway. But my BIL had to stop working for a few months due to his health and money started getting a bit tight.
That’s why she had to sell it. She could no longer keep it and absolutely not pay for the changes. I’ve arranged with her tailor to resume the project, as per my sister’s wishes before she had to sell the dress.
Here’s the feedback from the Reddit community:
eraserbedhead − you’re a good sibling ❤️
procrastinationprogr − Save the fabric that you’re cutting off.
MsOvernight1013 − If anyone in my family did this for me I would just sob and sob. Make sure you give her a day or two . to recover emotionally from all that love and all. those big feelings 🤣
ZenMoonstone − So very sweet. You are lucky to have each other.
TrashandTrauma − After doomscrolling Reddit I really needed this ❤️ thank you for the beautiful story
fairydaudsted − 😭 oh wow this is so beautiful
tawny-she-wolf − I love this but I wouldn’t make the changes, I’d just gift her the wedding dress a few months before a special occasion so that she has time to handle it herself – tastes sometimes change, so do minds – maybe she’ll want to keep it as is in the end or maybe she’ll have had a different length in mind than you do.
It would be a shame to “ruin” the dress trying to do something nice after you already rescued it.
MummaPJ19 − ❤️ this is the sweetest. My sister bought my wedding dress. She knew I didn’t have alot of money and refused to let me buy one from a dodgy site or second hand. We don’t have our parents in our life so she wanted do step up for me. She’s always done things like that.
She dipped into her house deposit savings and got my dress. Thankfully my dress didn’t cost too much, so she got the underskirt, veil and storage box. I’ll never be able to sell this dress, even if I wanted to. It’ll be mine until the day I die (or pass it on).
spankalink − Please update with Photos! What a sweet surprise this will be for her 💓
belckie − I wouldn’t have it altered before giving it to her. She might change her mind about altering it.
