History
Hafod y Garreg was built during a turbulent time in Welsh history, known as the Owain Glyndŵr rebellion against English rule.
The house was constructed in a hunting forest.
While there are no detailed records about its early years, some believe it might have been built as a hunting lodge for King Henry IV.
However, historical records are scant, and much of the house’s early history remains a “documentary blank,” as noted by RCAHMW investigator Richard Suggett.
Despite the lack of detailed records, the house’s age and historical significance are well established through dendrochronology, which dates the wooden beams to the summer of 1402.
Timeless Architecture
The house started as an open-hall structure and later became a two-story farmhouse with stone walls by the 16th century.
Key additions, such as the hall ceiling and fireplace, were made in the mid-1570s.
Despite its long history, Hafod y Garreg has been lovingly preserved.
And today, it offers a unique window into medieval Welsh architecture.
