‘Â AITAH for donating my girlfriend’s Kylie Jenner makeup?’
So here’s the situation – I (M28) bought my girlfriend (F25) some high-end Kylie Jenner makeup as an early Christmas gift. I spent quite a bit making sure to get items from the latest collection. Like $900. I could afford it because I won a big bet last week. I wrapped it and put it under our tree.
She found out what it was somehow (probably snooped or someone told her) and instead of being grateful, she started complaining that she “doesn’t even like Kylie’s brand” and “would have preferred something else.” Mind you, this is BEFORE she even opened it officially on Christmas.
I was pretty hurt that she was being so ungrateful about a thoughtful gift that cost good money. So I decided to donate the unopened makeup to a women’s shelter where I figured someone would actually appreciate it.
When she found out I donated her gift, she FLIPPED OUT saying I had no right to take back a gift and that I was being petty and controlling. But in my mind, if she made it clear she didn’t want it, why let it go to waste when someone else could enjoy it?
Some relevant details: The gift was still technically mine since it hadn’t been given yet She complained multiple times about not liking the brand All items were completely unused/unopened I donated to a good cause rather than returning it Am I being an asshole here? I feel like once someone expresses such clear disdain for a gift, it’s fair game to give it to someone who would appreciate it more.
These are the responses from Reddit users:
daisychain0606 − Story that never happened.
Upper_Rent_176 − ESH: you, her, Kylie Jenner, me, that bloke from the pub with the cap.
beachbumm717 − Why would you spend so much money on a gift you’re not sure the recipient wants?
[Reddit User] − $900 worth of make up?! How can you spend $900 on make up?? She doesn’t even like this brand so why did you not spend $900 on something she actually likes instead ?
DoreyCat − Incredibly fake. You could have returned this. Also it would be really hard to spend that much on Kylies stuff. Unless you just went and bought everything in every color which is insane.. This is just to s**t on women.
shanine124 − Since when is Kylie Jenner “high-end”?
mocha_lattes_ − ESH if you are going to spend money on something personal like make up, make sure you are buying something they like and will use. She’s is by far the bigger AH for her reaction to the gift though. As for donating the makeup you are in the clear on that. Totally acceptable response.Â
HunterandGatherer100 − 900 $$$ on Kylie Jenner’s makeup. YTA. And your gf is right, it’s awful makeup.
Aggressive_Farmer261 − Ehhh YTA… ask your gf what she wants??
Bigglzworth77 − Tis the season for karma farming. Yay!
