AITA For wanting to break up with my GF after finding out the truth?

When financial support becomes a battleground for sibling rivalry, how should parents navigate the delicate balance between fairness and necessity? A parent shares their turmoil after funding their son’s education but refusing to pay for their daughter’s luxury car, sparking accusations of favoritism and reigniting old family tensions.
‘AITA For wanting to break up with my GF after finding out the truth?’
Expert Opinions:
Educational vs. Lifestyle Spending in Families
Dr. Brad Klontz, a financial psychologist, notes in Forbes that prioritizing education over material requests is common in families valuing long-term growth. He states, “Parents often justify funding education as an investment in their child’s future, whereas luxury purchases are seen as discretionary. This distinction can lead to friction if not communicated clearly.”
Sibling Rivalry and Perceived Inequality
A Journal of Family Psychology study highlights that unequal financial support often triggers resentment, even when justified. Dr. Susan Whitbourne explains, “Siblings compare tangible gestures, not contextual fairness. Parents must openly discuss their reasoning to preempt misunderstandings.”
Financial Boundaries with Adult Children
Certified financial planner Suze Orman emphasizes in her podcast, “Once children are adults, parents aren’t obligated to fund their lifestyle. Clear boundaries prevent entitlement and encourage responsibility.”
Lets dive into the reactions from Reddit:
“Most users sided with the parents, arguing that education is a necessity while a luxury car isn’t. Others criticized the daughter for ignoring her brother’s academic sacrifices.”
This family’s struggle underscores the challenges of allocating financial support amid competing expectations. While the parents prioritized education as an investment, their daughter’s perception of inequality reveals the emotional weight of monetary decisions. Was withholding the car fair, or does it reflect deeper favoritism? Share your thoughts—should parents judge requests based on necessity, or strive for equal treatment regardless of context?
She’s a slut, dump the worthless k*nt!
NTA…this girl is screwing with your head. RUN AS FAST AS YOU CAN IN OPPOSITE DIRECTION!!! Don’t look back!
You’re her backup guy. Never be put on a backburner. I’ve flat told girls like this, if you like me we can date and give it a shot, if not I’m moving on with my life. My current GF/fiancé saw me for a while about 5 years ago, and went back to her ex. She finally broke up with him, and immediately texted me. She asked for a picture of me and I had actually slept with another girl the night before and sent her a picture of me with a bunch of hickies all over my neck that I was unaware of being there. She didn’t even mention it and made plans to hang out with me ASAP. I did the right thing and immediately ceased talking to any other females. We sat down and I had the discussion with her that if she wanted to be with me she needed to be serious about it because I was throwing away other opportunities I had so that we could be together. We came to an agreement and became a couple. That’s how things work in a healthy relationship. It’s not a game. If you are anything but her first choice, if she’s not willing to throw away everybody else and put everything into a relationship with you right then, you need to walk away. Games will be played and someone will get their feelings hurt. You have wasted time on this girl already that could have been spent finding someone who actually loves you. You are not the AH, she is. Never sit on the backburner as a backup.
She is a munipulative c u next tuesday and I smell a skank. Kick her to the curb and go find a decent girl. She deserves a bad boy who will trat her like s… which is what she deserves
My 2 cents of advice? RUN AS FAR AS POSSIBLE FROM HER!!! All you’ll get is a broken heart out of a toxic relationship!!!!
Oh and BTW : NTA!!!!!!! by far!
You will never have a non monogamous relationship with her. If this is important to you break up now.
NTA. Dumb for actually agreeing to be her boyfriend after she ghosted you. She is manipulating you and using you. There is no doubt she is still sleeping with other people. My dude, you are the back up. You should only ever be someone’s first choice. That goes for women as well, but she does not respect herself. Save a life of pain and tell her to kick rocks.
She’s a slut, dump her permanently!
YNTA, but a sucker for taking so long to realize this girl was playing you for the fool. Move on.
