AITA for blowing up on my nephew after he borrowed my computer without asking and moved it to his room?
One Redditor found themselves in a tense situation after discovering that their nephew had taken their prized gaming computer from their home office without permission. The nephew moved the high-end setup to his room to play Fortnite with friends, brushing off his actions by saying, “It’s just a computer! Chill out.”
After laying down strict rules on respecting boundaries, the Redditor now faces backlash from their sister for “overreacting.” Was this an understandable reaction to a breach of trust, or an over-the-top response? Read the full story below.
‘ AITA for blowing up on my nephew after he borrowed my computer without asking and moved it to his room?’
I have a gaming computer, a really nice one that I saved up for years to build. It’s not just my work machine; it’s my pride and joy. I keep it in my office, and I treat it like a sacred space, okay? Yesterday, I came home from work, and the first thing I notice is that my computer is GONE.
Like, poof! I freak out, naturally. I check downstairs, I check every possible corner of the house, and I’m about to lose it when I finally find it in my NEPHEW’S ROOM. I ask him what the heck is going on, and he tells me he just “borrowed” it to play Fortnite with his friends. I’m livid.
I had NO IDEA he was even in my office, let alone moving my extremely expensive setup without any permission. I told him he better come and move it back right now – I honestly thought I was going to have a heart attack just looking at my precious rig sitting on his desk like it’s some cheap IKEA furniture.
When I confronted him, he rolled his eyes and said, “It’s just a computer! Chill out.” Are you kidding me?! I’m raging. I can’t believe the audacity of this kid. I laid down some strict rules about respecting other people’s things, and you’d think he would have at least a shred of common sense to ask first, right?
Long story short, I told him I was done with him treating my stuff like it was a toy from a dollar store, and now my sister is mad at me for blowing up at him. I’m seriously considering not letting him use it ever again. AITA for getting angry and blowing up at my nephew for this?
Here’s how people reacted to the post:
Firm-Suspicion − I’m really tired of people thinking they can just take my stuff without asking. Am I the only one who values boundaries and respect for personal property?
Spacer_Spiff − NTA, not just a computer. Mine cost 4500$ or so, id be pissssed if somebody fukd with it.
Beck2010 − “Sister, you’re living with me for whatever reason. I opened up my home to you; let’s be very clear that you and nephew are guests in MY home. Remember how mom and dad would pull “my house, my rules” when we were growing up? Yeah. That applies here.
Except it’s MY house and MY rules. Nephew is no longer allowed to touch my set up. No exceptions. Unless you’re able to afford to reimburse me $X,XXX for my custom built set up, I would suggest you listen and make the correct choice in keeping his hands off it.”
NTA. And it’s time for them to move out.
SarshaXimena − NTA. Your reaction is completely understandable. Your nephew crossed a major boundary by taking your expensive and personal equipment without permission. It’s important to set clear boundaries and ensure he understands the value and respect needed for other people’s belongings.
Tea_Time9665 − Bro lock ur door. And tell ur sister to stop being a broke pos and buy her kid a gaming pc
duckat − NTA. Your nephew needs to understand boundaries.
Euthymis − Bro moved your entire setup like it was a folding chair for a Fortnite match… Yeah, definitely NTA. Some things are sacred, especially gaming rigs! Next time he ‘borrows’ something, maybe he’ll try your car because, ‘it’s just a ride, chill out’
wigglepie − NTA – Do you have the ability to lock your computer away, like in your office/room? And out of curiosity, how old is your nephew?
Turmeric_Ping − NTA. And how exactly does your sister expect you to react? Come and talk to her? If she gave a damn her son wouldn’t be such an e**itled little s**t and this would never have happened in the first place.
Sarithan3636 − I’m curious how old this nephew is? Where are the parents!? 😂 also NTA totally get where you’re coming from (love my gaming pc, it’s a constant work in process)
Was the Redditor’s response fair, considering the value and effort put into building the setup, or was their reaction too harsh? How would you handle a similar situation? Share your thoughts below!
