‘ I Called the Cops on My Sister After She Stole $2500—Was I Wrong?’

I (34F), a single mom of three, let my younger sister Sara (31F) move in after she lost her job and apartment. I even helped pay daycare for her 3-year-old son. But instead of being grateful, she betrayed me.

It started with small things—items moved, things missing. I put a camera in my room and caught her sneaking in. I confronted her and told her to stop. Then yesterday, I noticed my closet door ajar. My heart sank.

A handbag with $2500 I saved for my kids’ Christmas presents was gone. Checking the footage confirmed it: Sara and her boyfriend had been in my room, digging through my things. When I confronted her, she lied and denied everything—until I mentioned the camera.

I gave her until the end of the day to return the money, or I’d call the police. She freaked out, called our family to defend her, but I stood firm. No one offered to repay me, so I filed a police report and handed over the footage. Sara and her boyfriend ran, and now no one knows where they are.

My family is divided—some support me, others say I went too far. I feel betrayed beyond words. I was only trying to help her, and this is how she repaid me. Did I do the right thing?

Here’s the feedback from the Reddit community:

LosAngel1935 −  NTA they will catch your sister and her bf, sooner or later, just please don’t drop the charges when they do.

cosmopolite24 −  NTA. Please for your and your children’s safety, change all the locks in your home immediately. Also I would post an update to all family and extended family so that they don’t shield these two.

Trailsya −  When people get kicked out of their previous living situation, that is almost always a reason not to invite them in, as your situation shows. Doesn’t matter if it’s a stranger or your twin sister. You, however, are very much NTA for calling the cops on them.

Never let her anywhere near you again. Also, I don’t like that she has a BF that can come waltzing into your house. You have kids. The BF is clearly no good either.

Don’t have people move into your house again that might let shady males in, especially when you have kids. Sorry this happened to you. Don’t back down when it comes to the police. Good for you having it on camera.

Beneficial_Test_5917 −  You get the NTA Of The Day Award. (The day is barely beginning here in Scandinavia and you will beat all possible competitors.) She’s no “sister” to you, not by any definition. Do all you can when she and her bf are arrested to see they get the full punishment (and you get the full repayment) that all deserve here.

Difficult-Basket-449 −  I would go full no contact with your sister and anyone who supports her stealing from you. They can take the t**ef in.

ElsaExplores −  NTA. You gave her a free place to stay and she turned it into a personal savings raid. Calling the cops wasn’t overreacting. It’s basic don’t steal from your family 101.

No_Heron5186 −  Where? This literally just happened to me yesterday. Why do people get on Reddit and say oh I read this already? Stuff happens to people all the time.

Sebscreen −  NTA. Do not let their platitudes and crocodile tears fool you. Show no mercy because they deserve none! You took her in for free, forgave her after she broke into your room repeatedly, and she still lied to your face and TOOK MONEY MEANT FOR YOUR KIDS. Show your parents no mercy either if they try to interfere again. They are choosing a t**ef and criminal over you.

AnimalSea9437 −  NTA. What you do is follow through with the police. Don’t let anyone guilt trip you into dropping the charges because “family.”
Your sister broke your trust not once but, at the very least, twice on camera. She is not a safe person to be around for your sake and the kids.
Info: Where is her child currently?

Dingbats_are_cute −  NTA big time, what a user your sister is!

Was OP right to call the police on her sister, or did she take things too far? How would you have handled this betrayal? Share your thoughts below!
