Finally, as the curtain lifted, George Strait appeared in his signature all-black outfit and cowboy hat, ready to perform. Beside him was Chris Stapleton, who would join forces for a full-throated duet on “Honky Tonk Hall of Fame.”

The chemistry between the two artists, who have collaborated at select shows in recent years, was electric. Strait’s wife, Norma, was spotted in the crowd, swaying along to the music.

After receiving a standing ovation at the CMA Awards, George Strait humbly expressed his gratitude, saying, “First of all, I want to thank my Lord and savior Jesus Christ.” He continued, “I want to thank the CMAs for adding my name to the incredible artists on this small list of recipients, bearing the name of the icon Willie Nelson.”

Strait also shared his appreciation for the talented artists who performed his songs during the show. “It’s amazing to hear y’all do them – I’m so glad I got to ‘em before you,” he said, laughing, and adding, “Not you, Jamey.”

During the 2024 CMA Awards, George Strait honored those who had passed away, including some of his close associates like fiddle player Gene Elders and road manager Tom Foote. He also took a moment to express gratitude to his family, especially his wife, Norma.

“I want to thank my family who are all here tonight. My wife Norma, my son Bubba, his wife Tamara, my grandkids Harvey and Jillian,” Strait said. “Especially Norma, who has supported me for just shy of 53 years – it’s been an amazing 53 years.”

The heartfelt words left Norma, who wore a black and white sleeveless dress, visibly emotional, her eyes welling up as her husband spoke.

At this year’s CMA Awards, George Strait was honored with the 2024 Willie Nelson Lifetime Achievement Award for his outstanding contributions to country music over the past 40 years.
