In 1990, a young Melissa McCarthy packed her bags and headed for New York City with dreams of making a name for herself. She shared a tiny apartment with her longtime friend, shoe designer Brian Atwood, who encouraged her to step into the world of entertainment.

“I was thinking, ‘How hard could it be?’” McCarthy shared. “It was me there with my lovely gay guy friends and I was dressed like a big old drag queen. I went by Miss Y.”

When McCarthy was 27, she moved to Los Angeles and dived headfirst into The Groundlings, a legendary comedy theater.

It was there she mastered the art of improv and developed the unforgettable characters that would later define her career, paving the way for her success in Hollywood.

“It changed my life,” she told The Hollywood Reporter. “It taught me to write and how to do a character rather than just play crazy.”

Director Paul Feig, known for his work on shows like Arrested Development and The Office, first met Melissa McCarthy during her audition for Bridesmaids.

He told Forbes, “We just really have the same sense of humor. We have the same desire to make things that are funny but are still real and still play real, that aren’t cartoony and silly, and that aren’t mean to the characters or look down on the characters we’re portraying.”

The film’s incredible success, raking in over $289 million globally, set the stage for their ongoing collaboration. McCarthy soon became the star of Feig’s next projects, leading hit comedies like The Heat, Spy, and the all-female Ghostbusters reboot.

In a 2020 interview with Looper, Feig said, “It’s not like we always go, ‘let’s do the next thing together,” it’s always kind of ‘that was fun’… ‘You know who would be perfect for this would be Melissa.”

At a young age, Melissa McCarthy was drawn to fashion, influenced by her seamstress grandmother. She dreamt of working in the clothing industry.

“Since grade school, I focused on women’s clothing. My grandma was a seamstress, and I kept scrapbooks of designers,” she told Elle. “When I went to college, I did clothing and textiles. It really wasn’t until I moved to New York, my second night in, I did stand-up.”

However, after moving to New York, her life took an unexpected turn when she tried stand-up comedy and found her true calling.

In 2015, combining her passion for fashion with a desire to provide better options for plus-sized women, McCarthy launched her own clothing line, Melissa McCarthy Seven7, to create comfortable and stylish jeans that she felt were missing from the market.

“I spent a decade not owning jeans. I’d buy stacks of them but none were ever right. I believe you should be able to sit comfortably in your pants,” she explained.
